Biography
Dr. Peter Schollier has been full-time lecturer with the Department of History at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) since September 2000, and from 2006 to 2018 full-time professor (‘Hoogleraar’) with the same institution. In 2003, founder of FOST – Social & Cultural Food Studies, VUB. His research is in the field of the history of the standard of living, with interest in housing, wages, purchasing power, and material culture and, especially, food (in the broadest sense). Scholliers is PhD director of 11 theses in History, co-director of 4 theses (Sociology, Philosophy, and Criminology); co-director of Food & History, editor of Appetite, and board member of Food, Culture & Society, and Food and Foodways; reviewer for several academic journals and funding boards and organizer of various international conferences.
His teaching includes courses on the history of food (‘Food Traditions and Innovations’; ‘Themes in Cultural History’, both at VUB; ‘Social History of Food’, Università di Scienze Gastronomiche (the “Slow Food University”, Pollenzo, Italy).
Peter Scholliers’ administrative tasks include Vice-dean of the Faculty of Arts (2009-2012 and 2014-2016), Head of Department (1998-2001 and 2014-2016), and representative in various boards.
