Recipes from Amsterdam

DSC06613

The stuffed tomatoes pictured in the banner above are part of the cover of a cookery book of the Amsterdamse Huishoudschool (Domestic Science school). From the end of the nineteenth century domestic science schools were founded in towns like The Hague, Arnhem, Amersfoort and many more, each publishing its own cookery book. The books found their way into virtually every Dutch household. Up until the present day. In 2010 the 100th anniversary of the Amsterdam cookery book was celebrated with the 29th edition. The fascinating history of the changes in recipes over the time can be traced by examining the different editions. Check our collection in the online catalogue. The archives of the publisher of this popular cookery book Becht, are part of another important collection of the University of Amsterdam: history of the book trade.
